The Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a network protocol that guarantees that every bridged Ethernet local area network has a loop-free topology. Dr. Radia Perlman, a distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems, invented STP . Dr. Perlman came up with a way for bridges to achieve Layer 2 routing utopia: redundant and loop-free service.
